Working at The Lighthouse

Introduction

I’m Ellie, a second-year learning disabilities student nurse. I recently was given the amazing chance to complete a placement at the Lighthouse Day Centre. Through a variety of activities, events, and supported learning opportunities, The Lighthouse is committed to assisting adults with learning disabilities. It has been a fascinating and interesting experience for me to be here, and I can’t wait to tell you about it.

First Impressions

When I first walked through The Lighthouse’s doors, I was impressed by how kind and inviting everything was. I was a little anxious about what to expect because I had never heard of this service before beginning this placement. Every new placement for me as a student nurse is filled with a mixture of excitement and fear, a sensation that many of my peers also experience. My understanding of new Lighthouse students who might experience comparable anxiety when entering a new setting has improved because of this. I was welcomed with open arms by staff members and students, who immediately gave me a sense of belonging. Positive energy filled the environment, and it was obvious that everyone could feel supported, respected, and safe there.

Day-to-day experience

Students would frequently choose an activity to do in the morning, such as play a card game, but there are many other options available at the Lighthouse. I had the opportunity to help with a range of tasks, including cooking sessions and activities like bingo and discos.

Having conversations with the students was one of my favourite parts of the day. Whether we were playing games, or simply having a chat, every interaction was meaningful. The staff’s dedication to making a difference was genuinely motivating.

Memorable Moments

Seeing people gain confidence while I was there was one of the most unforgettable experiences I had during my time there. It was great to watch everyone being true to themselves displaying their talents and encouraging one another. It was a real celebration of the spirit of the community and individuality. Participating in game competitions that people were enthusiastic about and observing their competitive spirit blossom throughout was another unforgettable experience.

Overall

This placement has had a profound impact on me. It has broadened my perspective, strengthened my commitment to supporting individuals, and reinforced my career aspirations. This placement has influenced me considerably, I am appreciative of the knowledge and understanding I have gained, and I feel honoured to have contributed to such a great and encouraging service. My lifelong memories are the therapeutic relationships I formed and the experiences I had learning from everyone.

To sum up, I can say that my experience with Kingfisher Treasure Seekers has been immensely fulfilling. I strongly advise anyone seeking a meaningful and significant experience to become involved with this outstanding organisation. You may make a meaningful impact on the lives of individuals in our community by volunteering, taking part in events, or just lending your support.
